Redundancy: Why Process Alone Isn’t Enough

Redundancy is one of the hardest things any small business will ever face. It’s stressful, emotional, and often deeply uncomfortable, not just for the person whose role is at risk, but for the business owner or manager delivering the message and the team watching from the side lines.

And yet, with 327,000 UK redundancies forecast this year, many businesses will find themselves navigating this difficult territory. What often gets overlooked is that redundancy isn’t just a legal process. It’s a human experience.

Most businesses focus on getting the statutory steps right;  the timescales, the letters, the meetings, the scripts.  And absolutely, these matter, they’re essential. But they’re also the minimum because even when the process is legal and technically correct, people can still walk out of the room feeling blindsided, hurt, or confused.

After years of loyalty, it’s devastating to feel like you’re being “processed” rather than spoken to like a human being.  Redundancy affects real lives, mortgages, children, holidays, and everyday worries.  A script alone can’t hold that.

But Redundancy doesn’t just affect the person leaving. The remaining team are watching closely and what they see shapes how safe, valued, and secure they feel. They’re not celebrating. They’re unsettled, anxious, and wondering what this means for them.  They’re looking for signs of transparency, fairness, and compassion. How you treat the people leaving tells them everything about whether this is a business worth staying in.

A good redundancy process isn’t defined by ticking boxes. It’s defined by whether everyone involved those leaving and those staying comes out of it with their dignity intact.

That might mean:

  • Giving someone the best possible chance of securing their next role

  • Offering genuine support, not just statutory paperwork

  • Being honest about what’s happening and why

  • Communicating clearly with the remaining team

  • Creating stability and trust as you move forward

Redundancy is never easy. But it can be handled with empathy, clarity, and respect.

Removing roles doesn’t fix problems on its own.  The real work is in making sure what’s left is sustainable, that the team is set up to succeed, not just smaller.

If your business is facing difficult decisions, you don’t have to navigate it alone. With the right support, you can manage redundancy in a way that protects people, preserves trust, and strengthens your business for the future.
