Procrastination: Why It Shows Up and How to Lift Yourself Into Action
Updated: Oct 13
Running your own business means your time is constantly being pulled in different directions. Client work, admin, planning, people, finances, marketing, it all competes for space in your day. And somewhere in the middle of it all sits procrastination, quietly nudging you away from the things you know will move your business forward.
Most of us think procrastination is about laziness or lack of discipline. It isn’t. More often, it’s a sign of overwhelm, uncertainty or fear disguised as “I’ll do it later.”
Procrastination tends to show up when:
A task feels too big or unclear
We’re worried about getting something wrong
We’re tired or mentally overloaded
We’re stepping into something new or uncomfortable
We’re trying to make the “perfect” decision
When you run your own business, those moments are common. You’re not just doing the work, you’re making the decisions, carrying the responsibility and navigating the unknown. It’s no wonder your brain sometimes hits pause.
The truth is, we can’t create more hours in the day but we can choose how we use the ones we have.
Boosting yourself out of procrastination isn’t about forcing productivity. It’s about gently shifting your mindset so you feel capable, clear and ready to take the next step.
Here are a few ways to do that:
1. Break the task down until it feels doable
If something feels huge, your brain will avoid it. Shrink it. What’s the first five‑minute action you can take?
2. Replace pressure with clarity
Instead of “I must get this done,” try “What would make this easier to start?” Clarity is far more motivating than pressure.
3. Notice what you’re avoiding and why
Are you unsure what to do? Worried about the outcome? Waiting for the “right moment”? Understanding the reason helps you move through it.
4. Choose one thing and honour it
When everything feels urgent, nothing gets done. Pick one meaningful action and give it your full attention.
5. Celebrate progress, not perfection
Every small step counts. Momentum builds from movement, not from flawless execution.
Procrastination isn’t a flaw, it's a signal. It’s your mind saying: I need a bit more support, space or clarity before I can move.
When you respond with kindness rather than criticism, you create the conditions to move forward. You boost yourself up instead of dragging yourself down. And that’s where real progress begins. Running a business will always be busy. There will always be more to do. But when you choose how to use your time even in small, intentional ways you reclaim control over your day and your direction.
Procrastination doesn’t disappear overnight. But with awareness, clarity and gentle self‑encouragement, you can turn those stuck moments into stepping stones.
Choose your time. Choose your growth. And keep moving forward, one small action at a time.
